Group Counseling

Groups provide a safe environment in which you can experiment with new behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns and interests. Counseling Services has an extensive Group Program with updated offerings each quarter. Some groups focus on specific skills and themes while others provide support for specific groups of students. Some of the groups offered by Counseling Services require that you complete an initial intake session with one of the group leaders in order to carefully assess appropriateness of the group for your needs. Other groups are considered "drop-in groups" and have no requirements for participation beyond current registration as a UCSB student. Click here for more information about groups offered this quarter at Counseling Services.

Why would someone choose Group Counseling instead of Individual?

Some of the benefits of group are:

  • allows you to be less isolated as you work on your issues
  • helps you to realize you're not alone in your struggles
  • provides multiple perspectives on issues and how you are seen by others
  • provides an ideal means for practicing and learning new interpersonal behaviors
  • helping others helps you to see your own issues differently and to feel you have something to offer others
Research has documented group therapy's power in helping people with many types of issues.
