Location: Individual Counseling - Intake Process
Intake
Your first counseling appointment will be a 30 to 40 minute intake session.
You and the intake counselor will work together to clarify your issues
and to consider which services are most appropriate for you. During the
first meeting, the intake counselor will typically gather information about
your intellectual and emotional style, your family history, and your personal
relationship history. This information will assist in determining which
counseling strategies might be most helpful for you. With this information
in mind, you and the intake counselor can work together to formulate your
initial goals for counseling. Because of limited staff resources, and the
emphasis placed on professional collaboration within our agency, your intake
counselor may not necessarily be the person with whom you subsequently
engage in personal counseling. In some instances, factors such as professional
expertise, individual student requests, and high student utilization rates
may combine to limit who is available to work with you individually in
short-term counseling.
Because some presenting issues require further attention and time than is realistically
available within the short-term counseling model, the intake counselor may
determine that a referral to a more appropriate treatment setting or care provider
in the community is indicated. Should this be the case for you, the intake
counselor will work closely with you to identify the most appropriate referrals
given your circumstances, personal resources, and individual needs
